Arches National Park in Utah has more than 2, 000 sandstone formations, the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. The small city of Moab south of the park is the largest settlement in the area. Accommodations near Arches tend to be in standard, no-frills motels that cater to tourists, or in luxury resorts.

Moab

Almost a dozen chains, including Best Western, Days Inn and Super 8 maintain properties along Highway 191 in Moab, just south of Arches National Park. An equal number of privately owned motels vie for guests. Holiday Inn Express (hiexpress.com) is the closest chain hotel to the Arches entrance road. The hotel has an indoor heated pool and hot tub, and offers a hot breakfast bar. Rooms have views of the surrounding red rock cliffs. Aarchway Inn (aarchwayinn.com) is the closest non-chain. The hotel provides shuttle service into Moab and has indoor, secure bike lockers for cyclists.

Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa

Sorrel River Ranch (sorrelriver.com) on the banks of the Colorado River made Fodor's 2010 Gold Awards list for Best Sense of Place for its dramatic setting and cowboy charm. The resort, 20 minutes east of Moab, offers luxury standard rooms and suites with private balconies and custom-made furniture. The on-site spa provides standard massage therapy and holistic health services. Two-hour horseback tours leave the resort daily, and guides lead hikers along three trails. River Grill Restaurant, serving upscale American food, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Red Cliffs Lodge

In keeping with its Western location, Red Cliffs Lodge (redcliffslodge.com) features 20-foot ceilings, wood paneling, log furniture and heavy beams. The on-site Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage, celebrates the ranch's importance as a site for early filmmaking. Castle Creek Winery produces 6, 000 gallons of wine each year and offers tours and tastings. Rooms with private patios and kitchenettes face either the Colorado River or Castle Creek. The restaurant's Cowboy Grill pairs steaks with selections from the winery. Red Cliffs Lodge is on Highway 128 east of Moab.

Castle Valley Inn

Located in a five-acre oasis of gardens and orchards, Castle Valley Inn (castlevalleyinn.com) offers guests bed-and-breakfast rooms in the inn as well as a selection of separate cottages and cabins. A hot breakfast is included in room rates, and the hosts pack picnic lunches for guests planning to hike in Arches or Canyonlands park. A large, outdoor hot tub overlooks canyon walls and the La Sal Mountains rise to the south. Castleton Tower, one of the "50 Classic Climbs of America" is a short distance away.
